"Shea, No! Where are you going?!" Kalen raced after his wife- her purple fur was matted and had patches of dirt throughout it. But she still looked piercingly beautiful to Kalen.
They were being chased again. It was the fifth attack of the month, and Shea flew away as fast as she could, cradling her two fox cubs tight to her chest.
"You could be running right toward them! Shea!" He breathed hard trying to catch up to her, but she was so swift and fast it was impossible. His lungs burned and his mouth was charred.
"Just.. Just... C'mon Kalen. We have to... hurry!" She gasped, her lungs on fire. Kalen had tears in his eyes. He had always known his wife was very strong, but she just wouldn't listen to him. He was afraid. This could be the time when she got caught. Or worse. He couldn't think about it.
He finally caught up to her and grabbed her shoulder and whisked her back, embracing her in a tight hug. Tears streamed down her cheek. Her two daughters- Lila and Violet were still young cubs, and their mother cared dearly for them. But she was in danger.
They were being chased. Fairies of all types chased them with devilish looks in their eyes, and murderous personalities. They wanted Shea. They wanted her immortality and her power. But Shea couldn't let that happen. If she lost her immortality, she could die. And somehow these fairies knew how to drain her of it.
Kalen ran his paw through her soft fur on her head, trying to calm her.
"Kalen, they will find us. We have to go! They will..."
"Shhh..." He quieted her, "Calm down... Shhh..." She took deep breaths and cried into her husbands thick brown fur, "It will be alright Shea. I love you. You know that."
"Lets.... Lets get going." She prodded. He finally gave in and nodded. They were always running from something. They never got time together. Shea immediately sped off and he followed, letting the nature carry him with it. Suddenly he heard a boom- the sound of a bomb going off. They were close.
Suddenly they were circled. Shea hugged her daughters tightly to herself. The fairies wore dark cloaks and drooled, their eyes glowing with menace.
"We finally got her" One of the men laughed, his voice a raspy sound that sent shivers down Kalen's spine. This was his wife they were talking about. Shea slowly lowered to the ground and kneeled down on the soft soil, cuddling her two cubs and protecting them from whatever was about to happen.
"Please... no..." She pleaded. Her fur soaked with tears. Kalen knew she just wanted her daughters safe, but if she was protecting her daughters, he had to protect her. With nobody protecting him.
He lunged at the first fairy, but with a swift move of his paw he knocked Kalen forward with a tight fist. Kalen moaned but quickly recovered.
"Kalen, its no use. We're surrounded."
"The girl's smart Kalen. Maybe you should listen to your wife. We've got you surrounded and there's nothing you can do about it. Shea gained her composure and stood up straight and firm, her eyes closed but her expression strong.
"Kalen." She pleaded. He came over to her and she handed their two daughters to him. "I love you." She whispered, and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Just protect them. Whatever you do, keep them safe."
"I will." He swore.
Shea crumpled into a heap and cried, and the fairies laughed viciously as they surrounded her. Kalen knew his wife. He knew she would not let him save her. She was doing this to protect her daughters. And he would follow through with his promise and protect them, if it was the last thing he did.
He rose and flew into the distance. The fairies yelled to one another,
"Get him!"
But they were too late, Kalen was already gone.
